This story is based on the authors life. He was born and reared in the ancient Jordanian city of Salt, where he graduated from the local high school, at that time the highest institution of learning in the whole of Jordan and open to male students only. In those days, the government was the only employer in Jordan. Any young man who aspired to hold a prominent government position had to complete his secondary education at the school in Salt before going abroad to take advanced studies in one of the universities in a neighboring Arab country, Europe, or America. The young students upbringing was challenged when he discovered that the morals of the Western World were much more relaxed than in his home country. During his first months he found it difficult to obtain work, find a place to live, and make friends in America. During the lonely hours of his first holidays away from home and family, he finally discovered that deep and lasting friendships are formed when people have enough courage to share their deepest emotions and sorrows.
